Sweco has acquired assar architects, a leading Belgian practice specialising in large-scale public and private sector projects including offices, healthcare, defence, education, and urban planning. The move will expand Sweco’s architecture offering in Belgium and Luxembourg and adds approximately 150 experts to its team, consolidating assar architects immediately into the organisation. The firm reported a turnover of EUR 16.5 million in 2024.
assar architects is renowned for “inclusive architecture” and has delivered high-profile projects such as the NATO headquarters, major hospitals, and developments for European institutions and multinational clients. The acquisition strengthens Sweco’s ability to provide integrated architecture and engineering solutions, creating synergies for sustainable, energy-efficient, and digitally advanced urban developments.
Erwin Malcorps, Sweco Belgium Business Area President, emphasised the strategic value of the acquisition: combining expertise to maximise client value in the green transition and modernisation of the built environment. The deal aligns with Belgium and Luxembourg’s ongoing focus on infrastructure renewal, smart urban planning, and climate goals supported by EU initiatives such as the Green Deal, NextGenerationEU, and Horizon Europe.
This follows Sweco’s 2023 acquisition of VK architects+engineers, which added 600 experts, further solidifying its leadership in the region. Sweco’s broader strategy relies on a mix of acquisitions and organic growth, with over 160 acquisitions completed in the past 20 years, positioning it as Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy with 22,000 experts and EUR 2.7 billion in 2024 sales.
