Sandyford apartment block approved despite strong local objections

A scaled-down seven-storey, 71-unit apartment scheme at Sandyford’s Balally Shopping Centre has been approved by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, despite vocal opposition from residents, local businesses, and a parish council.

Originally proposed as a nine-storey, 100-unit development by Westleton Ltd, the plan was revised after the council ordered the removal of two floors. Internal planners had recommended refusal due to a lack of open space and childcare provision—but were overruled by the senior planner, who argued financial contributions and reduced unit numbers addressed both concerns.

Local voices remain unconvinced. Critics cite overshadowing, a loss of community amenity, and legal uncertainties around development rights. Despite this, the council ruled the site’s constraints outweighed objections, clearing the way for construction.
