Young architects and students are being invited to design a new public watersports facility at Lake Ohrid, one of Macedonia’s most iconic tourist destinations. The project seeks creative submissions for a sports and entertainment centre on the western shore of the lake, offering an exceptional opportunity for emerging designers to leave a lasting mark on a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Entrants are encouraged to draw inspiration from the region’s rich cultural history, natural landscape, and heritage. Lake Ohrid is renowned for its pristine waters, surrounding beaches, dense forests, and historic Byzantine monasteries. The new facility will host windsurfing, rowing, canoeing, and kayaking activities and serve as the operational hub for the annual Ohrid Swimming Marathon. Additionally, it will provide professional training for athletes participating in these events, making it both a recreational and performance-oriented venue.
The competition offers substantial rewards and recognition. First prize is €2,500, second prize €1,000, and third prize €500. Beyond the monetary awards, winners will see their designs published in architecture magazines, featured in a one-year subscription to Architecture Magazine, displayed at the University Ss. Cyril and Methodius, Faculty of Architecture in Skopje, and highlighted in digital magazines and blogs. This is a rare chance to gain professional exposure and contribute to a culturally and environmentally significant project.
The deadline for submissions is 15 June 2015, with winners announced on 10 July 2015.
