NYU Langone Health, a US academic health system, has unveiled plans for a new multi-billion-dollar medical campus in Melville, Long Island, following the completion of its $135.5 million (€124.8 million) acquisition of a 45-acre development site, as reported by Long Island Business News.

The campus will include a hospital with more than 500 private inpatient rooms, more than 70 emergency department bays, and advanced operating and procedure suites with the latest diagnostic imaging capabilities. The complex will also house the tuition-free NYU Grossman Long Island School of Medicine and dedicated scientific research space.

The multiyear project, which remains subject to state and local approvals, is expected to generate up to 8,000 union-represented construction jobs on Long Island, with a further 2,500 indirect roles across the region. The completed facility is expected to bring thousands of permanent jobs to the area.

Alec Kimmelman, MD, dean and CEO of NYU Langone, said: "This is one of the most ambitious and exciting projects ever undertaken by NYU Langone. The benefits to Long Island will allow us to better serve patients across Nassau and Suffolk counties with the highest-quality care, in a modern facility that offers the latest technologies."

The site, comprising the office buildings at One and Two Huntington Quadrangle, was acquired from TPG Angelo Gordon and We're Group, with CBRE representing NYU Langone in the transaction.

The development follows an earlier unsuccessful attempt by NYU Langone to establish a $3 billion (€2.76 billion) medical centre on the Uniondale campus of Nassau County Community College, a deal that fell through in 2023. Separate talks in late 2024 to acquire the 52-acre Melville headquarters of Canon USA also did not materialise.

Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth said the medical centre was an exciting opportunity for the Town of Huntington and would undoubtedly form a major component of the Melville Town Centre and surrounding community.

Ken Langone, chair emeritus of NYU Langone's Board of Trustees, said the academic medical centre represented a powerful commitment to expanding access to high-quality care for patients across Long Island while advancing the education and research that would shape medicine for generations to come.

Alongside the Melville development, NYU Langone confirmed it will expand emergency and specialty clinical services in Mineola, including cancer, cardiology, and neurology, with planned renovations also under way at Perlmutter Cancer Center's 120 Mineola Boulevard location.
