McCullough Mulvin Architects was awarded the Building of the Year – Net Zero/Passive House at the 2025 Building & Architect of the Year Awards earlier this year for its Egremont project in Killiney.
The accolade recognises the firm’s innovative approach to sustainable residential design, combining technical excellence, energy efficiency, and community-focused planning.
The Egremont development features 47 PassivHaus units, including a mix of apartments and houses with private, public, and play spaces, fostering a sense of ownership and connection among residents. The project integrates advanced passive housing principles, delivering high-performance sustainability standards while enhancing the overall living environment.
Judges praised the project’s careful attention to detail and commitment to quality. “This project demonstrated an exceptional approach to passive housing design, meeting the highest technical standards through thoughtful architectural decisions,” the judges said.
“From site geometry to materiality and spatial sequencing, every element was carefully considered to create a sustainable and high-quality living environment. With its integrated landscape design and ambitious multi-unit scale, this project serves as a benchmark for future housing developments in Ireland,” they added.
Egremont’s recognition reflects the rising standards within the awards, showcasing how sustainable design and meticulous planning are redefining residential architecture across Ireland.
Building on the success of 2025, the awards continue to highlight pioneering projects shaping the sector, setting a strong precedent as the industry prepares for the next cycle of innovation and excellence.
Who will set the benchmark in 2026, driving further advancements in sustainable residential design? Entries for the Building & Architect of the Year Awards 2026 are open until 19 December 2025, with winners to be announced on 23 April 2026 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry.
