Irish Life has officially opened its redeveloped headquarters on Abbey Street in Dublin city centre, marking a substantial investment in the company's long-standing north inner city home and delivering one of Ireland's most comprehensively certified sustainable office buildings, as reported by Business Plus.
Business Plus reported that rather than demolishing and rebuilding the site, Irish Life chose to refurbish and modernise the existing structure, a decision the company said significantly reduced embodied carbon while improving the building's energy performance.
The headquarters has achieved an A3 BER rating and Nearly Zero Energy Building status, alongside LEED Platinum and WELL Platinum certifications for sustainability and occupant wellbeing. The building has also secured WiredScore Gold for digital connectivity and became the first building in Ireland to achieve ModeScore Platinum, recognising the quality of its sustainable transport and commuter facilities.
The development will accommodate up to 3,000 employees from Irish Life and other European businesses within its parent group, and will serve as a hub for the company's continued investment in digital services and customer support.
The opening ceremony was attended by An Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris and coincided with the announcement that Irish Life will dedicate 1% of its annual pre-tax earnings, calculated on a three-year average basis, to initiatives focused on community wellbeing, environmental sustainability, and broader societal impact.
Declan Bolger, CEO of Irish Life, said the decision to remain in Dublin 1 was deliberate, adding: "We were founded in Dublin 1, and when we looked at the future of our headquarters, we made a deliberate choice to stay, to invest, and to give this building a new life. The result is a nearly zero energy workplace, built to the highest standards of sustainability and wellbeing, in the heart of the community that has been part of Irish Life for generations."
Founded in Dublin 1 in 1939, Irish Life has been headquartered on Abbey Street for almost five decades. The refurbishment approach reflects a growing industry preference for retrofit over demolition as a means of reducing construction-phase carbon emissions in urban commercial projects.
