South Korean architecture firm Heerim Architecture has secured the architectural mandate for the Mokdong Complex 1 reconstruction and maintenance project in Seoul, extending its footprint within one of the country’s most competitive residential redevelopment markets. The appointment further strengthens the company’s position in South Korea’s high-end reconstruction sector as major urban renewal projects continue across the capital.

Maeil Business reported that the appointment was confirmed during the first landowners’ general meeting held on 9 May at the Korea Artist Center Yechong Art Hall. Project implementer Woori Asset Trust said Heerim Architecture received 802 votes, ahead of A&U Architecture with 370 votes and Dongil Architecture with 122 votes.

Heerim’s proposal, branded THE FIRST MOKDONG, centres on a premium residential concept designed around Han River views, transit connectivity and integrated green infrastructure. Plans include approximately 1,900 households, a skybridge overlooking the Han River, direct subway access intended to create a super-station area complex and residential ceiling heights reaching 3.05m.

The design also incorporates a green network linked to the 5km Yongwangsan Mountain and Anyangcheon Stream corridor, aligning with broader urban planning trends focused on environmental integration and walkable residential districts.

The Mokdong appointment builds on Heerim Architecture’s existing mandates for Mokdong Complexes 12 and 14, consolidating the company’s influence across western Seoul’s redevelopment pipeline. The district has become a major centre for reconstruction activity as ageing apartment blocks are replaced with larger, higher-specification developments targeting premium domestic and investment demand.

South Korea’s reconstruction market has expanded amid policy support for urban renewal, infrastructure modernisation and sustained housing demand in Seoul’s metropolitan areas. Construction firms and developers are increasingly competing on integrated lifestyle design, transport accessibility and sustainability features as redevelopment activity accelerates across key residential districts.
