A tender process has been launched to redevelop the protected 1867 Galway Corporation Waterworks building in Terryland into an aquatic sports centre, with the project carrying a construction cost of €2 million, according to the Irish Independent.

The Irish Independent reported that the redevelopment is funded by Fáilte Ireland under the second Platform for Growth Scheme, with the project earmarked for progression in August 2025 and now entering formal procurement, with a tender submission deadline of 15 June.

The Galway scheme forms part of a broader national programme. Fáilte Ireland's Platforms for Growth Investment Scheme targets the delivery of 19 water sports facilities across 13 counties, with a total investment of almost €35 million directed at projects with the greatest potential to grow tourism across Ireland.

The redevelopment involves the full architectural transformation of the historic riverside structure, with new pedestrian walkways, drop-off areas, and reconfigured boundaries between the existing building and the grounds running to the River Corrib.

A 10m by 2m floating steel pontoon, connected to the building by a roller gangway and set back from the riverbank, forms a central design element. The pontoon received planning approval as part of submissions lodged in 2024.

Internal facilities will include a gym, ergonomic training room, changing and drying rooms, function rooms, mother and baby rooms, and office and meeting space, catering to rowing and other aquatic sports users.

A pedestrian and cyclist greenway running along the River Corrib will also be delivered as part of wider public realm improvements to the surrounding grounds.

Galway City Council chief executive Leonard Cleary said the development would ensure the Galway tourism experience met and exceeded all users' expectations, including through the enhancement of accessibility and improved participation for people with disabilities and older adults.

Fianna Fáil Galway West TD John Connolly welcomed the project's progression, saying: "It will be a great asset to our city, which has a great tradition of rowing. The pontoon will add much visitor interest, and the Greenway will be welcomed by walkers and cyclists and hopefully encourage more people to take up such leisure and recreational activities."

The building in Terryland sits adjacent to the N6 and the River Corrib, and the tender closing date is 15 June.
