Ericsson, one of Athlone’s largest employers, has announced plans to relocate its operations to a new 9,000-square-metre purpose-built facility at the IDA Business and Technology Park in Garrycastle. The move aims to deliver an inspiring, innovative, and sustainable workplace for its 1,300 staff.
The new premises will span two buildings over three floors and will be designed to support operational efficiency, employee experience, and long-term strategic priorities. “This is a positive and strategic step for our future, and a commitment to offer you the best employee experience that will help us deliver on our business priorities,” Ericsson told its staff.
A detailed architectural design process will begin immediately, with the company targeting approvals from relevant boards during the first half of 2026. Staff updates will continue throughout the project to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption.
The relocation follows a €200 million investment announced in April 2025, supporting research, development, and innovation at Ericsson’s Athlone facility. The project, backed by IDA Ireland, focuses on advancing “world-leading capabilities for the management of high performing, open programmable networks” to improve communications service providers’ operational efficiency.
Ericsson has been based in Athlone since 1974, when it opened as a factory employing 250 workers. The company celebrated its 50th anniversary in September 2024, highlighting its long-standing commitment to the region.
The new facility reflects Ericsson’s strategy to create modern, sustainable workspaces that enhance productivity and employee engagement. While no changes to headcount are planned, the move will provide a state-of-the-art environment aligned with the company’s technological ambitions.
