Cork-based timber frame manufacturer Cygnum has officially opened an €8m extension to its Macroom production facility, boosting its annual capacity from 1,400 to 2,500 housing units and creating 150 new jobs.

The Irish Examiner reported that the opening was inaugurated by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who described the expansion as a clear vote of confidence in modern methods of construction in Ireland.

Cygnum, which was established in 1997, installed 1,250 timber frame housing units across Ireland in 2024, recording turnover of €34.6m for that year, up from €23.6m the year prior. Operating profits grew from €1.45m to €5.46m over the same period.

The new extension incorporates advanced manufacturing technologies and digitalisation, enabling greater precision, improved efficiency, and more sustainable use of materials. Cygnum designs, manufactures, and installs timber frame structures for residential developments and has delivered projects spanning large-scale housing, hotels, apartment buildings, care homes, and schools.

Cygnum recently joined Chadwicks Group, part of Grafton Group, which intends to operate both businesses alongside each other.

Patrick Atkinson, chief executive of Chadwicks Group, said the expansion is a clear demonstration of Cygnum's ambition and capability, adding that increasing capacity to this level is a significant step in supporting the delivery of new homes at the pace and scale required.

John Desmond, managing director of Cygnum, said the investment comes at a transformative moment for the business, with the expanded capacity and advanced manufacturing technologies positioning the firm to support customers in delivering homes across Ireland while contributing to a more sustainable built environment.

Taoiseach Martin said the investment aligns with government priorities around housing supply, regional development, and sustainability, and commended Cygnum and Chadwicks Group for their ambition and leadership.
